Sanding and refinishing hardwood floors in Stuart
Scratched, gray or worn hardwood usually does not need to be replaced. If the boards are sound, sanding down to bare wood and applying new stain and finish brings the floor back to a like-new surface for a fraction of the cost of new flooring.
Our refinishing crew uses a dust-controlled sanding process, and we can put stain samples down on your actual floor so you see the color in your own light before we commit to it.
Refinish or replace?
Refinishing is usually the right call when:
- The damage is on the surface: scratches, dull or worn finish, pet marks, sun fading
- You want a different stain color on the same floor
- Boards are flat and firmly attached
Replacement makes more sense when boards are cupped or buckled from water, when an engineered floor’s wear layer is too thin to sand again, or when the floor has already been sanded down to the tongue. We check this during the estimate and tell you which option fits. If replacement is the answer, see hardwood flooring installation.
Our refinishing process
- Inspection. We look for loose boards, water damage, gaps and old repairs.
- Repairs. Damaged boards are replaced and woven into the existing floor.
- Sanding. The floor is sanded in passes down to clean, bare wood with dust control.
- Stain selection. Sample colors go down on your floor for approval.
- Stain and finish. Stain is applied, followed by protective finish coats.
- Final walkthrough. We go over the floor with you and explain how long to wait before moving furniture back and putting rugs down.

Hardwood refinishing questions
Can engineered hardwood be refinished?
Often, yes. It depends on how thick the top wood layer is. Thicker wear layers can be sanded once or more; very thin ones can only be screened and recoated. We measure it before recommending anything.
Can I change the color of my floors?
Yes. Sanding removes the old stain, so you can go lighter, darker or switch to a natural finish. Some species take dark stain unevenly, which is why we test samples on your floor first.
Do I need to move out during refinishing?
That depends on the size of the job and the finish you choose. We go over the schedule, which rooms are off limits and for how long when we give you the quote.
How much does refinishing cost?
Price depends on square footage, the condition of the floor, repairs and the finish system. You get a written quote after we see the floor.
